Democratic transparency, ‘social’ space, and exploration of the possibility of using solar energy were the main factors that contributed to the design of Edmonton City Hall.
The building was conceived as a humanly scaled architectural form stepping back from the existing sunken garden to lessen.
The atrium is a multi-storied skylit interior courtyard that was to be an extension of the open outdoor place, serving both functional and ceremonial needs.
This space facilitates visitors’ orientation, permitting natural light into the interior space acts as a buffer between outside conditions and the interior environment, and most importantly, creates an open people space. This project was done in collaboration with Malik Architects.
